SUMMARY:Cows in Sausalito? - The history of dairy farming in southern Marin
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 25 @ 7 pm RSVP at www.driversmarket.com 415-729-9582 In the late 1800's\, Marin was the Bay Area's major supplier of dairy products\, and cows were often seen on the streets of Sausalito and grazing on the surrounding hillsides. Into the 1950's\, over 40 dairies were active in southern Marin alone\, all of them operated by Portuguese immigrants from the Azores and their descendants. Today almost no trace of them remains. Join us for an evening with local historian Mike Moyle and learn about the history of these dairies and their contribution to Sausalito. Last year\, Mike joined us Around the Table for a discussion on the history of Caledonia Street. Mike Moyle was born on the Big Island of Hawai'i and spent his career as a corporate lawyer in San Francisco working on US/Japan business projects. Following his retirement he became involved with local history research. He is a member of the Sausalito Historical Society and serves as the Chair of the History Committee of the IDESST Sausalito Portuguese Cultural Center. Mike and his wife\, Nancy\, have lived in Sausalito for the past forty years and have four sons.
